Homeland Security head says they 'could have done a better job' explaining the 'disinformation' board

  • The Department of Homeland Security announced a "disinformation" board last week, prompting criticism.
  • Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the board will not monitor US citizens.
  • He said it's a continuation of work DHS has been doing since before the Biden administration.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday the agency could have done a better job communicating its newly announced Disinformation Governance Board.

The board was announced on Wednesday and is intended to counter misinformation that poses a national security concern, such as Russian disinformation or misinformation spread to migrants by smugglers.

"The spread of disinformation can affect border security, Americans' safety during disasters, and public trust in our democratic institutions," DHS said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The disinformation board drew swift criticism from conservatives, sparking concerns over policing speech. Some drew comparisons to the "Ministry of Truth" from George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984."

Mayorkas addressed some of those concerns in an interview on Sunday with NBC's "Meet the Press."

"We could have done a better job of communicating what it is and what it isn't," Mayorkas said of the board, adding that "it's a working group" that will look at best practices to address "disinformation that presents a threat to the security of our country" in way that doesn't "infringe on free speech" or "on civil liberties."

Those best practices will then be shared with US officials who have operational authority to combat such threats. He said the board itself will not have any "operational authority."

Host Chuck Todd asked about the controversial decision to have Nina Jankowicz lead the board. Jankowicz, a disinformation expert, has been accused of having a political bias.

Mayorkas said she was an "eminently qualified individual" and a "recognized expert on battling the threat of disinformation that presents a threat to the security of our homeland from Russia, from China, from Iran, from the cartels."

Mayorkas also appeared on CNN to address concerns about the board and said it would not monitor American citizens, adding that it's a continuation of work Homeland Security has been doing since before the Biden administration.

How to dissolve sugar in water at room temperature?

I had a lemonade that taste a lot different and upon enquiring, I found the secret was mixing sugar in water at room temperature, not heating it up & stirring by hand. It was prepared by a catering company and they didn't want to detail the recipe.

I tried to replicate it by just putting 2 tbps of sugar in a glass of 500 ml water and just stirring it. Stirred for 30 mins, still had some undissolved sugar. Not sure if there some scientific reason or just my poor stirring skills.

Is there some ratio of sugar to water? Any ideal temperature? Fine or big grain sugar? Tips to do it more efficiently & at a larger scale?

I am hoping to make a syrup (concentrate) form like I do with demerara syrup (which I make by heating).

Gubernatorial candidate at Trump rally says he will 'take sex education out of the schools and put it back in the homes where it belongs'

Nebraska candidate for governor Charles Herbster greets guests before the start of a rally with former President Donald Trump on May 01, 2022 in Greenwood, Nebraska. The rally at the I80 Speedway was rescheduled from Friday after severe weather passed through the area.

  • Charles Herbster said he would put sex education "back in the homes where it belongs."
  • The Nebraskan Gubernatorial candidate also said he was going to "quit CRT" in the state.
  • Herbster has been accused of sexual assault by eight women, two of whom have come forward publicly.

Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster said that sex education should be taken out of schools and "put back in the homes" during a Trump campaign rally in Greenwood, Nebraska, on Sunday.

The Trump-endorsed Republican said he was going to "quit CRT" and "cut taxes" before going in on sex education.

"We're gonna take sex education out of the schools and put it back in the homes where it belongs," Herbster said Sunday evening to the Trump crowd.

An April 14 report from the Nebraska Examiner quoted eight women who accused Herbster of sexual misconduct between 2017 and 2022. Many of them had been groped during a 2019 Republican fundraiser in Douglas County, Nebraska. Three people have spoken on the record to corroborate the claims.

Elizabeth Todsen, an employee of State Sen. Dave Murman, who was present at the dinner, came forward as Herbster's second public accuser on Saturday.

Todsen told the Examiner that after Herbster groped her while greeting her table, "it was just all a blur after that happened because it was all I could think about."

"This decision to come forward with my story has been extremely difficult due to my fear of repercussions from Charles W. Herbster, a powerful voice in Nebraska politics," Todsen said to Insider in a statement provided on behalf of her lawyer. "But after thinking about this for years now, I know that it is time that Nebraskans know about the horrible actions made by Charles W. Herbster."

Previously, State Sen. Julie Slama was the only person not quoted anonymously in the Examiner's story. Herbster has since filed a lawsuit against her.

In a press release sent to Insider, Herbster – CEO and President of Carico Farms and Herbster Angus Farms – denied all the allegations.

"Charles W. Herbster has already filed legal action against one of the people named in reports and will be taking legal action against others," the release said. "He will not stop fighting until his name is cleared and he is vindicated."

Trump also defended Herbster during the rally, saying that the accusations were "malicious charges to derail him."
