George Foreman Cleaning Question;

Okay, probably a unimaginative question. But my googling is failing me. I have tried Googling a thousand different ways, to no avail. All results are how to clean‍ the plates--but that's not my issue. I was making some faux yakitori in my foreman grill (lol don't judge) with chicken skewers, and basting the tare sauce on the chicken as it cooked. It actually came out pretty good for not having a little yakitori grill. But I digress, my issue is this: The metallic part of the grill got some of the liquid from the marinade as is now covered in a blackened crust that doesn't want to come off. My question is, what is the best way to clean this? I'm assuming since it's the metallic part I don't want to submerge it? Has anyone had this issue ever with a Foreman grill? I obviously know how to clean the grill plates, but I'm just not sure about the ramifications of messing with the electric/metal part. Maybe it is safe to submerge in liquid, I just don't know. If it matters, it is a newer GF grill the "rapid-cook" model.
