Frying potatoes

So yesterday my brother and I were frying up potatoes when i heard a pop and oil splattered everywhere, including on his face and arms.

We used a recipe that he found in TikTok. You had to mash the potatoes add salt, potato starch, and cheese, put it in a zip loc bag, freeze it, cut it, then fry it. We’ve already done this once before but this time we decided not to add cheese, and to freeze it overnight because it was getting late. We did thaw out the potatoes a bit but it was still pretty frozen.

If possible may I know the reason why it exploded? Was it because of how it was frozen? Was the oil too hot? And may I get some suggestions on what to put on my brothers burns? We did put the burns under cool water yesterday for a while, put a damp towel on it too, then put some paw paw on it. My mum says that we can put Vaseline on it so we’re gonna try that out.

Thanks.
