Need a nondairy substitute for buttermilk to brine chicken in, any suggestions?

Hi, due to certain reasons I cannot use any dairy. I came across a few recipes for fried chicken that require the chicken to be brined in buttermilk. Are there any substances that replicate buttermilk well enough so I can get the same results?
