Part of raw chicken thigh is hard and dry?

Hey everyone, just wanted input on whether this is safe to eat or not. I bought a pack of boneless chicken thighs a little while back and the sell by date isn’t until a couple days later. I ate half the pack a day or two ago and was fine and left the rest in the fridge, opened. The one exposed to the most air had a part of it that was dried out and hardened/darkened. I thought initially that is was “woody chicken” but I still cut off the whole dry area and stuck the rest in some marinade. After a bad case of food poisoning a few months ago, I just want to double check that this is safe to eat. Smelled and looked fine for the most part, but just making sure. Thanks for the help in advance!
