Texture of chickpeas?

I have always been very intimidated by chickpeas, however recently i’ve been extremely interested in trying them. I’m a huge texture person, and don’t want to waste a meal because I end up not liking the texture. How would you describe the texture. Also do chickpeas have to be roasted, or can they be eaten without being cooked first. Finally, any suggestions for recipes to try them in first?
