Why can I leave homemade yogurt in a warm place for 10 hours to incubate, but have to refrigerate storebought yogurt?

And why do I have to refrigerate homemade yogurt after it sets? Is there a difference between homemade and storebought yogurt that affects the way it behaves out of the fridge? (the homemade one being made from a spoonful of storebiught yogurt + storebought milk)
