Tried to make Char Siu and it was…just ok. What am I doing wrong?

After having char siu at a new Chinese restaurant, I decided to make my own and it didn’t turn out very well. I bought a bottle of char siu sauce at a Asian market. I’m confused as to how I am supposed to prepare it. Is it a marinade or does it get slathered on like American bbq sauce? Or both? It’s thick so I kinda figured I was supposed to do like American bbq. I know it’s made with pork butt but I had BOGO ribs and I wanted to use them up.
