Reverse searing indoors - What is the right balance for skillet temperature and trying to get a good sear without smoking up my house?

If I go max heat on my skillet, I get my house filled with smoke whether I use clarified butter or an oil with a high smoke point, but I also want a good sear. I'm scared of lowering the temperature in case I don't get a good sear too. I end up having to steam mop my floors and wiping down my whole kitchen if I go max heat though.

Any advice?
