Amazon's Prime Day October sale is a great time to score a deal on a Kindle, including $40 off the Paperwhite

The October Prime Day event is the perfect time to grab a Kindle as a gift or for yourself.

Amazon's Prime Early Access Sale is live, and premium Kindles like the Paperwhite and Oasis are on sale for up to 29% off, with three months of Kindle Unlimited for free. The discounts extend to Kindle bundles, which include a protective case and charger, and Kindle Kids bundles, which come with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+.

So far, the deals apply to older products and not the new 2022 Kindle or the just-announced Kindle Scribe, Amazon's new e-reader you can write on that's launching in November, but preorders are available.

Here's a complete list of the best Kindle deals you can get right now. Other Amazon products — like the Echo, Fire TV, and Fire tablet lineups — are discounted for Prime Early Access too. Remember, in order to take advantage of these deals, you must be an Amazon Prime member.

Kindle Paperwhite (2021): $40 off

The Kindle Paperwhite Essentials Bundle packages the e-reader with a handy fabric cover and USB charging adapter. The bundle is 38% off ahead of the Prime Early Access Sale.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition: $55 off

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition carries over the same features found on the standard Paperwhite while adding more storage at 32GB, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light. You can save $55 on the device right now.

What is the Amazon Prime Early Access Sale?

Amazon's Prime Early Access Sale is a new shopping event aimed to give Prime members exclusive "early" access to holiday deals, hence the name. It's basically a second Prime Day.  The members-only deals event begins runs from October 11, 2022 through Wednesday, October 12. 

Do I need to be a Prime member to access the Kindle deals?

Similar to Prime Day, Kindle deals are exclusive to Amazon Prime members. Amazon Prime costs $15 a month or $139 per year; a 30-day trial is available to new members.

What is the latest generation of Kindle?

Amazon recently announced the upcoming release of the 2022 Kindle, which comes with an improved 300ppi screen, longer battery life, and USB-C charging. It's available for preorder now and will release on October 12 for $100 with ads or $120 without. 

Amazon also announced the all-new Kindle Scribe, the company's first e-reader that you can write on. The e-reader features a 10.2-inch display and comes with its own stylus. Priced at $340, it's also available for preorder now and will release on November 30.

It's highly unlikely that these two models will go on sale during the Prime Early Access Sale. So if you're interested in getting the latest and greatest, you will have to wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday. 

Is the Prime Early Access Sale the best time to buy a Kindle?

Amazon deal events like Prime Day and the Prime Early Access Sale usually offer the best prices on Amazon devices, including Kindles. The prices we're seeing on the latest Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis are just $5 more than the all-time lows we've seen in the past. 

Which Kindle should I buy in 2022?

The Kindle Paperwhite, which was just refreshed in 2021, is the Amazon e-reader we recommend for most people. It has major advantages over the base model, including a waterproof design, sharper display, and a warm light option that's easy on the eyes. It's perfect for reading at home, and even better for when you're reading on the go. 

But choosing the best Kindle depends on your needs, where you plan to use it, and how often. If you're on a budget or new to e-readers, the basic Kindle is a fine choice. However, the current model launched in early 2019, so you're better off with the all-new 2022 Kindle, which most likely won't go on sale during this second Prime Day. 

Otherwise, the Kindle Oasis is Amazon's most premium model. With a 7-inch display, it is the biggest Kindle screen available (next to the soon-to-be released Kindle Scribe), and has front-facing buttons for page turning and also offers a free cellular connection for downloading books, so you can always access your digital library on the go.

Keep in mind that you don't need a Kindle to read Kindle ebooks. Books purchased from the Kindle store can be accessed through the Kindle app on smartphones and tablets, and you can read online from your computer.

What does an 'ad-supported' Kindle mean?

Amazon refers to certain Kindle models as "Lockscreen Ad-Supported." These Kindles display personalized ads on the lockscreen when they are in sleep mode in exchange for a reduced price. You'll save $20 by buying an ad-supported Kindle.

You can make a one-time payment to remove the ads if you choose to do so later down the road. If you want to purchase a Kindle without ads, look for "Without Lockscreen Ads."

Can I trade my old Kindle for Amazon credit?

Amazon offers an upgrade program for Kindle owners to trade in their old devices for store credit and get a 20% discount on a new model.

The amount you'll receive for your trade-in will depend on how old your Kindle is, and it will be applied to your account as an Amazon gift card. A separate credit for 20% off a new Kindle will also be added to your Kindle account, regardless of how old or broken your Kindle is, and you can apply that to Prime Day discounts.

Most Kindle models are worth between $5 and $25 in Amazon trade-in credit, while the latest Kindle Oasis can be traded for $75.
