blue crab steaming

Just wondering how you would clean blue crabs to be cooked. I like to keep cook them alive and whole because I enjoy eating the mustard and innards. So should I clean the shell crab alive and risk it pinching me before steaming or should I steam it, wait for it to cool, then clean the shells and resteam? I'm just confused on which way the order goes.
