Is raw garlic in mashed potatoes ever a thing?

Pretty savvy home cook here. Less experienced friend cooked her "mom's recipe" for me recently and threw in some minced raw garlic at the very end of making mashed potatoes (like 30 seconds before plating). It was rough getting small random spicy surprises in some bites but I didn't want to be rude and say something and I also thought there's a small chance this is just a rare thing I've never encountered that some people enjoy. My plan is to cook for her soon and make mashed potatoes with roasted garlic and see what she says or somehow hint during the process that the garlic is being roasted.
