So I decided to treat myself tonight and go to my local pizza place. I always order a Stromboli with sun dried tomatoes, black olives, onions, and extra garlic (about 2 cloves of minced garlic spread throughout a 12” Stromboli). It is normally perfection! However, after taking one bite tonight I tasted something off. I thought it was maybe the salad I had just finished mixing weird with the flavors. So I continued trying to eat it. Each bite I took reassured me that something wasn’t right but I kept thinking it was just in my head or a “me” problem. Finally, I said something to my boyfriend. He tried a bite and spit it out immediately! He said it tasted off and gross.
I called the restaurant to ask them/let them know. The owner spoke with me and he checked all the ingredients that I had ordered. He said he wasn’t denying what I was saying and tasting but that he couldn’t find a problem and also said they had not had any other complaints. He offered to remake it, give me a refund or give me one for free the next time I order.
What I tasted was a chemical, sour, “off” taste. Just nasty! It even smells chemical and “off”. At first I honestly thought that maybe the restaurant had just cleaned their oven or something but that wouldn’t make sense as this was ordered during their dinner rush and they use brick ovens. I did open the Stromboli up to exam things. I found a few pieces of garlic that had brown spots on them. I also noticed that there was a ton of garlic inside! Like at least 6 cloves of garlic minced inside. So now I’m not sure if maybe it was the abundance of garlic or if it was bad. I know I love garlic and I’ve eaten a ton of it many times before without ever tasting what I did tonight. Does this sound like the garlic was bad or if maybe I was just tasting too much garlic?
