Cognac substitute

I'm making steak au poivre for the first time, and it has a Cognac sauce, but my Cognac is super old and lost its flavor. Can't upload an image for some reason, but is St-Rémy VSOP a suitable replacement? Stuff tastes like rubbing alcohol, but I think that's just because I don't like brandy.
