Cutting meat cross grain... Dumb question?

So I get the idea of cutting the meat cross the grain. But I'm confused. So you cut the meat, let's say a steak cross the grain. You now have strips but you need them bite size. So you end up having to cut in with the grain to get cube pieces. So in the end does it matter or am I missing something?
