Did my chickpeas spoil?

I'm a novice cook trying to cook a South asian chickpea dish for a party. I accidentally left my chickpeas soaking at room temp for 24 hours and the water smelled a little sour. I rinsed them thoroughly and they didn't smell anymore. I get very nervous when cooking for others (obviously don't want to get a party of people sick). Are the chickpeas fine or should I throw them out?
