Mortar and Pestle generating dust and sediment.... is this normal?

Please help I feel like I'm losing my sanity....

TLDR - I have ground the heck out of my new mortar and pestle but it still generates a fine gray powder whenever I use it.

I purchased a new Mortar and Pestle, specifically the Chef Sofi - 2 cup - black polished exterior. Whenever I use it It generates dust from the grinding of the surface.I attempted to prep it for use yesterday by:

  • 2 passes of grinding just dry white rice,
  • 1 pass of rice and salt
  • Then I attempted to season it by grinding garlic, salt, black peppercorns, and cumin seed.
  • Then I went to make dinner and ground some garlic and ginger but it looked really grey… so I threw it out
  • then I did like a good 40 minutes of grinding just water. To smooth out the inside and see if I was generating and particles from the stone.

I then rinsed it and let it dry to come back to it later. Today I:

  • ground with just water again to see if it would make the water murky, it still does. I tasted the water and it tastes fine...i guess, but i still feel weird about it.
  • did another pass of dry white rice and kosher salt
  • then a pass of white rice and a little water and salt.

The interior is extremely smooth by this point but I am still generating dust/gray matter from grinding.

Is this normal? it is kinda unappetizing to think about granite dust being in my food. especially when something so white like garlic and ginger is coming out gray.
