Why does buttermilk make so many baked foods taste better?

Pancakes and biscuits taste so much better when they’re made with buttermilk. My favorite cake and brownie recipes use buttermilk as well. I think it adds a better flavor to a lot of baked goods, although I can’t really put my finger on exactly how it tastes different. What is it about buttermilk that adds to the flavor profile of things like biscuits, pancakes, cakes, and brownies?
