Gloves in the kitchen

I haven’t worked in a kitchen since about 1990 and was wondering when gloves in the kitchen became the norm. Certainly we didn’t have them back in my day.

Follow up question: Does it really matter or is this like the TSA where it feels good but doesn’t really do anything except create waste?
