Why do people wash chicken?

I didn’t know this was a thing but today I learned that there’s a cohort of the population who strongly believe that raw chicken must be washed and disinfected before cooking.

Outside of running chickens under cold water and then patting dry and for certain recipes rubbing salt over the chicken skin to “exfoliate” it and then rinsing it with cold water I have never “washed” raw chicken before and still don’t understand the need given proper cooking will of course kill any bacteria that would otherwise be washed away.

Any insight into this?
