Manzanita peppers

I found a Bon Appétit recipe that called for mild, medium and hot peppers. At my store, manzanos were the hottest ones. I think I am allergic to them. I chopped them up and sautéed them, wearing reading glasses to protect my eyes. I have cooked with and eaten straight Japones peppers (the small red ones found in Kung Pao Chicken) with no trouble. These were kicking my ass. And they tasted like hot mildew to me. Any thoughts?
