Onion or garlic first?

As a matter of Context, I'm Brazilian and here it's such a staple you have to do a sofrito with a mix of garlic and onion. What happens is everybody I know diverge on what has to be toss first in the oil of a frying pan.

In my opinion (and what I've learned and researched), garlic goes first to season and to leave aroma in the oil. And later, the onion, because it releases a lot of water in the oil..

Bur most of people I know do the opposite (onion and then, garlic)

So, what should be the correct?
