Why is the beef filet in beef Wellington wrapped in plastic after it is salted? Wouldn't it be better to let it dry in the fridge?

I have always read that salting and drying in the fridge intensifies the flavor more than other methods. Also, wouldn't removing some of the extra moisture reduce the sogginess of the beef wellington. Additionally I have never seen any dish where meat in plastic after salting other than this dish.

How to scale sourdough pizza recipe?

I make mostly Neapolitan style pizza and cook in wood oven. When using active dry yeast it is super easy to scale my recipe. I have not yet perfected a sourdough mostly because my ratios are always off. Using active sourdough starter that is approx 1:1 water to flour, how do i know how much i need for 500 vs 1000g bread flour or in between? I aim for 250g dough balls at 65-70% hydration (depending feeling). I dont want to add toouch starter and have tough dough or not enough and have no flavor and id really rather not have to keep adding things to eventually land at the right texture. Is there any basic scalable ratio i can keep in mind? Usually doing at least 24 hour cold proof.

Thanks for suggestions.

Michael Cohen believes Trump is likely keeping copies of top-secret documents at his children's homes, Bedminster, and Trump Tower

Trump
Former President Donald Trump is facing a DOJ investigation into whether he mishandled top-secret documents.
  • Michael Cohen thinks Trump could be have copies of the top-secret files found at Mar-a-Lago.
  • Cohen said Trump might have stashed the documents at his homes in Bedminster and New York.
  • Cohen also suggested that these files might also be in the homes of Trump's children.

Michael Cohen, who was once former President Donald Trump's lawyer, believes Trump likely has copies of the classified documents the FBI seized from Mar-a-Lago stashed in other locations.

Cohen was reacting on Twitter to an article from The Washington Post on the Department of Justice's recent court filing, in which the DOJ suggested that Trump's team may have concealed or moved top-secret files when officials were probing the matter.

"I believe Trump has copies, potentially other documents as well, at other locations including his children's homes, Weisselberg's florida home, Bedminster, NJ golf course, Fifth Avenue apartment, etc…" Cohen tweeted.

Cohen was referring to Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization's former CFO, who in August admitted to orchestrating a payroll tax-dodge scheme at the organization.

During its search of Mar-a-Lago on August 8, the FBI seized 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked "top secret" and files that may have concerned nuclear weapons. According to the warrant for the search, the DOJ is looking into whether Trump broke any of three federal laws — including the Espionage Act — by keeping the documents at his Florida residence.

This week, the DOJ also released a photograph from their search of Mar-a-Lago, which showed several folders bearing the word "top secret" strewn across the floor.

It is unclear if the former president ever made copies of these documents, or if these copies are being kept at the former president's other homes. A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Cohen was Trump's lawyer and close confidante for a decade. In 2018, he was the subject of a search of his home and office, as part of a Trump-related investigation into illegal hush-money payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels

Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to felonies including tax evasion, campaign finance violations, and bank fraud. He was sentenced in December 2018 to three years in prison and was disbarred in February 2019 by the New York Supreme Court.

For his part, Cohen has weighed in on many aspects of the Mar-a-Lago raid. He celebrated the news of the raid, saying that Trump was finally being "held accountable."

He later weighed in on how Trump was likely nervous about a potential mole at Mar-a-Lago and said he would not be surprised if one of Trump's children or his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was an FBI informant.

Cohen has also posited that Trump may attempt to find a scapegoat for any offenses uncovered by the Mar-a-Lago raid, such as his former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. He also speculated that Trump likely kept the classified documents as a "bargaining chip," so he could threaten the release of classified information to America's adversaries as a "get-out-of-jail-free card."

Pad Thai variants

My wife likes Pad Thai. We really like the stuff from certain restaurants. We used to do the Street Kitchen kit, but it's different from the restaurants. It's a much more fish-saucy flavored one. We like it okay, but we like the restaurant version more.

This past weekend I went to an Asian market and got ingredients and got to work trying to make the sauce. The first one was fish sauce, oyster sauce, tamarind paste, brown sugar and rice vinegar. This one came out tasting almost exactly like the Street Kitchen version, so not what I was aiming for. I tried adding some Sriracha in a second version, but that definitely wasn't the flavor I was looking for (not bad, just not what I was aiming for).

In doing more research, I've come across mention that some restaurants (I'm assuming in America, but not in Thailand) add a good bit of ketchup to their sauce. Is this the secret ingredient I'm missing? I don't normally use ketchup (I use ketchup on meatloaf and that's it, and I haven't made meatloaf in years), so I don't want to buy it if it's not going to get me what I'm looking for.

I've also heard of pulverizing dried shrimp and adding that to the sauce. Not sure if that's my secret ingredient? Just looking for the restaurant secret.

Trump claims the FBI scattered top-secret documents all over the floor at Mar-a-Lago to make him look bad

A composite image of Donald Trump (left) and the DOJ's photo of top-secret documents found at Mar-a-Lago (right).
Former President Donald Trump made several Truth Social posts in response to a photo shared by a DOJ showing some of the documents recovered from the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago.
  • Trump accused the FBI of making him look sloppy in a picture shared of files found at Mar-a-Lago.
  • He claimed without evidence that agents purposefully tossed files "haphazardly all over the floor."
  • "Perhaps pretending it was me that did it!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Former President Donald Trump has claimed that the FBI made him look sloppy and messy by scattering documents found during the agency's Mar-a-Lago raid on the ground to photograph them.

Trump made several Truth Social posts on Wednesday raging about a photo shared by the Department of Justice, which showed classified documents seized in the raid strewn about on a carpet.

"There seems to be confusion as to the 'picture' where documents were sloppily thrown on the floor and then released photographically for the world to see, as if that's what the FBI found when they broke into my home. Wrong!" Trump wrote.

"They took them out of cartons and spread them around on the carpet, making it look like a big 'find' for them," he wrote. "They dropped them, not me — Very deceiving…" he added.

In a separate post, he complained about the "terrible" way the documents were found strewn "haphazardly all over the floor."

"Perhaps pretending it was me that did it!" Trump added.

The DOJ's photo was made publicly available as one of the attachments in a court filing on the Mar-a-Lago search. In the picture, several folders bearing the word "top secret" were laid out on the floor beside letters that appeared to bear the White House letterhead. The content of these letters was redacted.

Also seen in the DOJ's picture was a framed copy of a 2019 TIME magazine cover that Trump appeared to have kept at his Mar-a-Lago home despite its less-than-flattering depiction of him.

The DOJ's court filing also provided additional information about the raid, including how some of the documents found were so sensitive that FBI agents and DOJ attorneys needed additional clearances before they could look at them.

The DOJ did not state in its filing if the files seen in the photo were found in that state. Representatives for the DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Biden rebukes Sen. Lindsey Graham for saying there'll be violence in the streets if Trump is indicted: 'Where the hell are we?'

Lindsey Graham; Joe Biden
President Joe Biden called out Sen. Lindsey Graham for saying there would be "riots" if former President Donald Trump were to be indicted.
  • Biden hit out at people like Sen. Lindsey Graham for predicting violence should Trump be indicted.
  • "Where the hell are we?" asked Biden while referring to Graham's comments.
  • Graham had said there would be "riots" if Trump was prosecuted for mishandling classified documents.

President Joe Biden hit out at Sen. Lindsey Graham this week for predicting an outbreak of violence if former President Donald Trump were to be charged with a crime.

"No one expects politics to be patty cake, it sometimes gets mean as hell," said Biden in a speech on Tuesday in Pennsylvania.

"But the idea that you turn on a television and see senior senators and congressmen saying if such and such happens, there will be blood in the street," Biden continued. "Where the hell are we?"

While Biden didn't mention Graham by name, the South Carolina senator was heard on Fox News' "Sunday Night in America" saying that there would be "riots in the streets" if Trump were to be prosecuted for "mishandling classified information." Graham had been referring to the documents that the FBI seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence during a raid earlier this month.

During his Fox News appearance, Graham also claimed without substantiation that there was a "double standard" when it came to federal law enforcement, citing Meta's handling of a story about Hunter Biden's laptop after an FBI warning.

"Most Republicans including me, believe when it comes to Trump, there is no law. It's all about getting him," he said.

Graham responded to Biden's comments during a Tuesday appearance on Fox News, saying he "rejects violence" while accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of "bailing out rioters" — a reference to those arrested in Minnesota for protesting over the death of George Floyd.

This was an erroneous claim as Harris didn't post bail for the protesters but instead asked people to "chip in" to the Minnesota Freedom Fund to help post bail for them.

DOJ says that 'efforts were likely taken to obstruct' its investigation into Trump's handling of government records

Attorney General Merrick Garland, former President Donald Trump.
The Justice Department said Donald Trump's accusations against the government were "meritless."
  • The DOJ said in a court filing that Trump's Mar-a-Lago lawsuit "fails for multiple, independent reasons."
  • It said Trump is not entitled to a special master because the Mar-a-Lago "records don't belong to him."
  • It also said that classified records may have been "concealed and removed" and that "efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation" into Trump.

The Justice Department late Tuesday urged a federal judge to reject Donald Trump's request for a court-appointed "special master" to review materials seized from Mar-a-Lago, arguing that the former president is not entitled to any such recourse "because those records don't belong to him."

"Not only does Plaintiff lack standing to raise these claims at this juncture, but even if his claims were properly raised, Plaintiff would not be entitled to the relief he seeks," the filing said. The department argued that Trump's lawsuit "fails for multiple, independent reasons" and that it has "shown no basis for the Court to grant injunctive relief."

It also said that classified government records may have been "concealed and removed" from a storage room at Mar-a-Lago and that "efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation" into Trump's handling of national security information.

The filing pointed to a June 3 letter that one of Trump's lawyers, Christina Bobb, signed stating that to the best of her knowledge, all classified materials at Mar-a-Lago had been turned back over to the Justice Department pursuant to a grand jury subpoena.

But when the FBI executed a search warrant at Trump's Florida residence two months later, it "recovered twice as many documents with classification markings as the 'diligent search'" that Trump's lawyers and other representatives had weeks to perform, the filing said. That "calls into serious question the representations made in the June 3 certification and casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter," it added.

The Justice Department's response Tuesday came a week after Trump sued to stop the department from continuing its review of materials seized from Mar-a-Lago. In the lawsuit, Trump's lawyers asked Judge Aileen Cannon to order investigators to halt that review until she appointed an outside expert — known as a "special master" — to determine whether any of the material taken by federal agents is privileged.

Cannon, a Trump appointee confirmed in 2020, indicated in a weekend order that she was inclined to grant Trump's request for an independent special master. She also ordered the Justice Department to file under seal a more detailed inventory of materials seized during the August 8 search of Trump's residence and private club in South Florida.

The judge set a hearing for 1 p.m. Thursday at the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach.

In a court filing Monday, the Justice Department said it identified a "limited set of materials that potentially contain attorney-client privileged information." A team specially assigned to filter out such information is following procedures to address potential privilege disputes, the Justice Department said.

FBI agents removed more than two dozen boxes of materials from Mar-a-Lago during the August 8 search, including 11 sets of classified documents, several of them categorized as top secret. On Friday, Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, told lawmakers that her office was leading an assessment of the potential risk to national security that would result from the release of those materials.

In a separate court proceeding, the Justice Department on Friday unsealed a public version of the affidavit in support of the search warrant for Trump's home. Though heavily redacted, the document provided the clearest description to date of the FBI's rationale for pursuing an unprecedented search of a former president's home.

According to the affidavit, the FBI decided to seek a search warrant after reviewing 184 classified documents, including some that appeared to bear Trump's handwriting, that the former president turned over to the National Archives in January. In the months that followed, the affidavit states, FBI agents came to suspect that Trump and his team were concealing the fact that he continued to store classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

"There is also probable cause," the affidavit said, "to believe that evidence of obstruction will be found."

A previously unsealed search warrant specified that the Justice Department is investigating whether Trump violated the Espionage Act and other laws governing the handling of government records.

Michael Cohen says Trump may have already given away top-secret information from documents he brought around the world

Former U.S. President Donald Trump leaves Trump Tower to meet with New York Attorney General Letitia James for a civil investigation on August 10, 2022 in New York City.
The Washington Post recently reported on how former President Donald Trump would take unorganized boxes of classified documents with him on overseas trips.
  • Michael Cohen believes Trump may have given away classified information while traveling.
  • The Washington Post had reported that Trump would take unorganized boxes of documents overseas.
  • Cohen posited that Trump likely took the documents with him for "nefarious reasons."

Michael Cohen, former President Donald Trump's personal lawyer for 12 years, believes Trump may have given away top-secret information while traveling around the world during his tenure in the White House.

In a TikTok on Monday, Cohen reacted to a recent article by The Washington Post that reported on how Trump would take unorganized boxes of classified documents with him on overseas trips and store them in hotel rooms, even in countries that were considered adversaries to the US.

Stephanie Grisham, who served as White House press secretary under Trump, also told the Post that documents her former sent for would often "just disappear."

Cohen said in his TikTok: "Let me be very clear, considering I know this 'Mandarin Mussolini' extremely well. Donald doesn't take boxes of material around the world for no reason at all. He took it for nefarious reasons."

"I stand firm when I say that Donald wants to use this in order to hold the country hostage," he later said. "That's his goal. His goal, because he knows his ass is in the grinder right now. He knows that he's cooked, that he's going to use this information, look for all we know, he's already given it away, but there's definitely more that's there."

Cohen posited that Trump would try to use the classified information to "ensure that he doesn't spend the rest of his natural life behind bars charged with treason."

He previously theorized that the former president intended to use the classified documents he kept at his Mar-a-Lago home as a "bargaining chip" in case he was ever at risk of being indicted or jailed.

"The second that they put him in handcuffs, he'll turn around and say: 'You don't seem to understand. I have the documentation showing, for example, where our nuclear launchpads are, or other information — sensitive national security information," he said.

Cohen suggested a situation in which Trump could threaten to have his supporters release the top-secret information to Russia or Iran. "My prediction, indictments are coming soon," Cohen said in his Monday TikTok.

Cohen has been known to criticize Trump and make bombastic comments about the former president, such as when he told CNN that the former president may have kept "love letters" from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un among the documents in his home.

In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to committing crimes including tax evasion, campaign finance violations, and bank fraud and was later sentenced to three years in prison. The New York Supreme Court disbarred him in February 2019.

Cohen's claims come as Trump faces scrutiny over the classified documents seized by the FBI following its raid on the former president's Mar-a-Lago home earlier this month. Trump is also facing three criminal investigations, a civil investigation, four lawsuits, and an indictment against the Trump Organization over what prosecutors say is a payroll tax-dodge scheme.

One of the lawsuits against Trump was filed by Cohen, who seeks $20 million in damages for time he spent behind bars and lying to Congress about Trump's dealings.

Axis deer butterflied leg - any ideas on how to break it down/cook?

I recently ordered the butterflied axis deer leg linked below. I'm hosting some family and want to grill it into something good. Hoping to have some sort of steak or medallion cut as the final product. They have some recipes on their website but there is not a lot of description as to what cuts of meat are included in the leg. I'm wondering if I'll be able to break this leg down further into different cuts or if I should cook it whole as they suggest. On their website it seems they "shave" the final product down after cooking. Would also appreciate any advice or tips! Thank you

Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters erased false stolen election claims from his campaign website. It now says, 'We need to get serious about election integrity.'

Blake Masters, a Republican candidate running for US Senate in Arizona, speaks at a Save America rally on July 22, 2022, in Prescott, Arizona.
  • GOP senate candidate Blake Masters recently scrubbed a few far-right talking points from his website.
  • It was previously reported that he removed language showcasing extreme anti-abortion stances.
  • His campaign also appears to have removed the false claim that the election was stolen.

The campaign website for Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters appears to have removed a popular far-right claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Masters' website previously stated that the "2020 election was a rotten mess" and that "if we had a free and fair election, President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office."

The claims were on Masters' campaign website as late as August 23, based on available archived screenshots from WaybackMachine, before it disappears around August 25.

Screenshot of text from Blake Masters' campaign website.
Screenshot of Blake Masters' campaign website, blakemasters.com, from August 23.

The website now just states, "We need to get serious about election integrity," before going into several points to reform US elections, including banning drop boxes and "ending indiscriminate mass mailing of ballots."

CNN first reported the updates to the website.

His campaign site has toned down some of its language around other go-to Republican talking points.

NBC News previously reported that Masters' website removed more extreme anti-abortion stances, calling for a "federal personhood law" that could make abortion illegal even at the state level. The website also previously said that Masters was "100% pro-life."

Now, it says Masters supports a "law or a Constitutional amendment that bans late-term (third trimester) abortion and partial-birth abortion at the federal level," while also affirming that the candidate disagrees with Roe v. Wade.

In his section on immigration, CNN reported that the website was scrubbed of language that references the great replacement conspiracy theory — a claim that non-white voters are being brought into the US to outnumber white voters for a certain political agenda.

A source close to Masters told CNN that the website is updated and managed by the candidate himself.

Masters' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said if Trump is prosecuted for mishandling classified information 'there will be riots in the streets'

Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.
  • The Justice Department is investigating Trump's handling of classified government documents.
  • Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday that if Trump is prosecuted there will be riots.
  • Graham said federal law enforcement has a "double standard" when it comes to Trump.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday there will be riots if former President Donald Trump is prosecuted over his handling of classified materials.

Graham made the comment in an appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Night in America." The South Carolina senator said he thinks there's a "double standard" when it comes to federal law enforcement, citing recent comments made by Mark Zuckerberg about Meta's handling of a story about Hunter Biden's laptop after an FBI warning.

"Most Republicans including me, believe when it comes to Trump, there is no law. It's all about getting him," Graham said, adding: "And I'll say this, if there is a prosecution of Donald Trump for mishandling classified information after the Clinton debacle… there will be riots in the streets."

Graham doubled down on the comment a little later in the interview.

"If they tried to prosecute President Trump for mishandling classified information after Hillary Clinton set up a server in her basement there literally will be riots in the street," he said. "I worry about the country."

Graham appeared to be referring to Hillary Clinton's use of a private email, instead of a more secure government email, while serving as secretary of state. Clinton was investigated multiple times, including by the State Department and the FBI.

In July 2016, an FBI investigation found there was "evidence of potential" criminal violations concerning the handling of classified information but that there wasn't sufficient reason to bring charges. A years-long State Department investigation that ended in 2019 found Clinton's use of a private email server put classified information at risk but that there was "no persuasive evidence of systemic, deliberate mishandling of classified information."

Clinton cooperated with the investigations, turning over her devices and emails, according to what has publically been reported. No charges were ever brought against her.

The FBI searched Mar-a-Lago on August 8 as part of a Justice Department investigation into potential violations of laws related to the handling of government documents. The Justice Department said Trump brought sensitive and classified documents with him to Mar-a-Lago when he left office, according to court records.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and said he had declassified the documents.

At southwestern tex-mex restaurants, why are the rice kernels swollen and split with a soft mouthfeel?

Is it parboiled rice? I have gotten great advice and recipes on this sub for mexican rice, but the only thing I am still having trouble replicating is the very specific texture of the rice. I do toast the rice in oil first, etc.

EDIT: Thank you for the initial replies saying the rice is overcooked. I know I said the rice had a "soft mouthfeel" but it isn't mushy like overcooked rice. There is a chew to it but it is soft and yielding on the inside. Am I just confused?

Help w/ Extruded Pasta

Tried making spinach bucatini with the KitchenAid KSMPEXTA extruder attachment tonight. It **mostly** worked (see the result here https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch0fg4CLPUa/), but I'm hoping to improve.

I've read that many commercial extruded pastas use 30% liquid for 100% semolina dough. So with that ratio in mind, I juiced a bag of baby spinach and ended up with 80g of spinach juice, and combined it with 267g of semolina and and 5g of salt (approximately 2% of the flour weight).

The uncooked bucatini was a little salty but not offensively so, but distressingly, only about 1/3 of the pasta survived the extruding process intact. Many of the strands exploded/cracked during the extracting process (resembling octopus tentacles), and a few of the passing-for-bucatini strands broke into shorter lengths than I would have preferred.

Is my dough too wet? Too dry? Is the salt the culprit? Do I need to knead it more? Is it a mistake to use 100% semolina? Is this machine awful and I'm an idiot for expecting good things without investing in the proper tools? Something else?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Need tempeh marinade ideas

So basically, my girlfriend has developed a few health issues. She developed hemorrhoids, and the doctor says that she should eat as little meat as possible, if not eliminate it completely. Within weeks of this diagnosis, she's also developed what look like allergies (rashes on the skin), but might not be allergies because the allergologist who took a look at her bloodwork didn't seem to think they were allergies, and antihistamines don't seem to work on them. However, we have identified a few triggers:

  • sugar (including most sweeteners like coconut sugar, honey and maple syrup, but not including stevia, sucralose, erythritol, and certain oligosaccharides)
  • starches like rice (regardless of color), pasta, potatoes, etc.
  • wheat, oats, flour (not including almond and coconut flour)
  • fruits that are high in sugar
  • night shade vegetables
  • coffee
  • garlic
  • canola oil
  • cow's milk (but not things made of milk like cheese and yogurt)
  • eggs when not cooked properly

Anyway, the weird need to combine vegetarian and keto has led us to experimenting with tempeh. But as of now, all we've really done is season it and fry it in butter. I've read that tempeh is best using marinades. However, most recipes I find online contain ingredients that are on the list above. I can try a few replacements like replacing soy sauce (which contains sugar) with coconut aminos or sugar with stevia, but the stuff I find online is still really hard to pull off even with replacements.

My current thoughts are trying to make a version of Filipino barbeque marinade using coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, stevia instead of sugar, and a stevia-sweetened soda instead of Sprite. However, I'd have to completely cut out garlic and ketchup (the recipe I'm basing this off of is here), so I'm not fully confident in this.

I also want to have other marinade options, so I've come to this subreddit for help. If you guys have any other tips for cooking tempeh, I would also greatly appreciate it.

Thank you all in advance!

Citrus peeling - Why is it that when I use a peeler, some orange peels come off with a ton of white on the peel and others come off as pure orange?

I peel oranges a lot, but it’s always a gamble whether or not I’m going to get a good orange. Sometimes, I peel them and the peel comes off and has NO WHITE on it. That makes it easier to extract the oils when I muddle them for an old fashioned.

But with some oranges, it’s nearly impossible to get the peel off without the white stuff coming off with it and blocking the oil from coming out easily. Also it just tastes worse.

I’m 99.9% sure it’s due to variances between oranges, but I have no idea how to pick the right ones at the store!

Stiffed vendors, huge financial losses, and a trademark denial: Truth Social faces an uncertain future amid concerns over Trump's dwindling popularity and continued controversies

  • A company seeking to merge with Truth Social cited Trump's reputation as an "important factor" to its financial success in an SEC filing.
  • As Trump contends with ongoing legal battles, Digital World said its financial footing "could be adversely affected."
  • Truth Social is accused of stiffing a vendor out of more than $1 million in contractually obligated payments.

The future of the former president's 10-month-old social media platform, Truth Social, is on uncertain ground as the app faces huge financial losses and is accused of shorting its vendors amid Donald Trump's continued legal controversies.

A planned merger between the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the business that created the Truth Social platform, and the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Digital World Acquisition Corp, has been postponed indefinitely as the Securities and Exchange Commission investigates the platform's business dealings.

SPACs like Digital World are companies formed either to raise funds through an initial public offering or for the purpose of merging with an existing company. SPACs have no other commercial operations. In an SEC filing earlier this month, Digital World said it had "neither engaged in any operations nor generated any revenues to date" as its sole purpose was to prepare to take Truth Social public.

In another filing, Digital World sought shareholder approval to delay the merger, set to take place Sept. 8, until next year, citing concerns over the former president's reputation potentially impacting business.

"If President Trump becomes less popular or there are further controversies that damage his credibility or the desire of people to use a platform associated with him, and from which he will derive financial benefit, TMTG's results of operations, as well as the outcome of the proposed Business combination, could be adversely affected," the filing read.

Digital World's stock has plunged more than 75 percent since its peak in March — from a high of $97.54 a share to $27.52 each — and in a recent SEC filing the company reported it lost $6.5 million in the first half of the year.

This week, Truth Social was dealt another blow as its trademark application was denied on Thursday for being too similar to another social app called "Vero — True Social."

Further illuminating the social platform's financial woes, Fox Business News reported on Thursday that Truth Social is locked in a bitter battle with its vendor, RightForge, and is accused of stiffing the hosting service out of $1.6 million in contractually obligated payments.

Three people with direct knowledge of the matter told Fox Business News that Truth Social made just three payments to RightForge for its web hosting services and stopped making payments in March.

Other Trump businesses have faced similar payment battles before, including contractors who claim they were left unpaid for more than $2.98 million after repairs at the Trump International Hotel and a small business owner who said Trump stiffed him $100,000 worth of pianos. Unpaid bills at the Taj Mahal Casino Resort amounted $90 million, while three liens were placed against Trump's DC hotel after $5 million in contractors fees were left unpaid

Trump's companies have filed for bankruptcy at least six times — a fact Digital World noted in SEC filings, The Washington Post reported, saying: "a number of companies that were associated with [Trump] have filed for bankruptcy" and that "there can be no assurances that [Trump's media company] will not also become bankrupt."

Representatives for Trump, TMTG, Truth Social and RightForge did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Trump-backed Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters scrubs website of extreme anti-abortion stance as GOP frets over impact of Roe reversal on the midterms

Blake Masters speaks at a campaign event on August 1, 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Republican Blake Masters quashed some anti-abortion language on his website after his primary win.
  • The change comes as some Republicans are said to be concerned about how abortion may sway voters.
  • Masters, who was endorsed by Trump, won the GOP Senate primary in Arizona on August 2.

US Senate candidate Blake Masters appears to have removed some of the more extreme anti-abortion stances from his website after securing the GOP nomination in Arizona earlier this month.

Masters, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, won his primary on August 2 and is set to face incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in November.

Masters' campaign website described him as "100% pro-life" and said he supported a "federal personhood law (ideally a Constitutional amendment) that recognizes that unborn babies are human beings that may be killed," according to screenshots taken by Insider in May.

But now, that language has been removed and his stance on abortion softened. NBC News reported the website was updated on Thursday this week.

The website still outlines his support for the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer funds from being used on abortions, and calls for taxpayer funding to be stripped from Planned Parenthood.

But it no longer says Masters is calling for a "federal personhood law," which could prevent abortion from being legal even at the state level. Instead, his website now says he supports a "law or a Constitutional amendment that bans late-term (third trimester) abortion and partial-birth abortion at the federal level" — a significantly less extreme position.

Screenshot of Blake Masters' campaign website, blakemasters.com, from May 2022.
Screenshot of Blake Masters' campaign website, blakemasters.com, from May 2022.

The updated website also now says he supports programs that help pregnant women provide for a family and decide not to have an abortion.

Also removed since May was a promise to only vote for judges who disagree with Roe v. Wade and believe there is "no constitutional right to an abortion." The Supreme Court overruled Roe in June, striking down the Constitutional right to an abortion that had been recognized for nearly 50 years.

The revisions to Masters' website comes as some Republicans are said to be worried over the impact Roe's reversal could have on the general election.

The same week Masters won his primary in Arizona, voters in Kansas became the first to directly confront the issue of abortion at the ballot box since the fall of Roe. Voters in the solidly red state decisively rejected an amendment that would've weakened the right to an abortion in the state.

Masters' campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Katherine Tangalakis-Lippert contributed reporting.

Member of Dr. Oz's medical advisory board says he no longer associates with the celebrity physician because of his politics: 'I want nothing to do with him'

Trump, Dr Oz
Pennsylvania Republican US Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz joins former President Donald Trump onstage during a rally in support of his campaign.
  • A member of Dr. Oz's advisory board no longer associates with the physician because of Oz's politics.
  • Joel Fuhrman, who appeared on "The Dr. Oz Show" five times, says he now wants "nothing to do" with Oz.
  • "I just can't...fathom a person to be ethical and reasonable and be a Trump supporter," Fuhrman said.

Joel Fuhrman, a family physician and celebrity "diet doctor" who served on the medical advisory board of "The Dr. Oz Show," told Insider he can no longer support Mehmet Oz due to his ties to former President Donald Trump.

"I, of course, respected Dr. Oz for many years, knowing he was a doctor," Fuhrman told Insider. "But now that he's a Republican Trump supporter, I want nothing to do with him."

Fuhrman added that he believes Trump is "an evil individual who's done horrible things for our country," citing the party's denial of climate change and Trump's attempt to "take over" the 2020 election as his primary concerns.

Oz is the Republican candidate from Pennsylvania running for a seat in the Senate against Democratic challenger John Fetterman. Trump endorsed Oz in April.

A current resident of San Diego, Fuhrman is not eligible to vote for Oz in the upcoming election but feels strongly about the political stances Oz has adopted since running for office.

"I'm no longer a Dr. Oz supporter because my political viewpoints are very much against what Trump stands for and what Oz has taken on politically," Fuhrman said, adding that he believes the physician is motivated by ambition and a desire for power, rather than profit. "So I have not been in contact with him."

The medical board from Oz's show has recently faced criticism over questionable science promoted by members of the group, including lining one's nose with petroleum jelly to avoid viruses and drinking tea made of onion juice and lemon to treat flu symptoms.

Fuhrman told Insider he had no specific duties or meetings while serving on the board, but knew Oz from their time at the University of Pennsylvania together and, at one time, considered the physician-turned-politician his friend. Fuhrman appeared on Oz's show approximately five times to promote his "nutritarian" diet.

The nutritarian diet is largely plant-based — adherents are meant to have one pound of raw vegetables and one pound cooked each day — and no animal products or dairy, oil, added salt, or between-meal snacking. Dietitian Carolyn Williams referred to Fuhrman's nutritarian meal plan as a "fad diet" that "takes the concept of nutrient density to an extreme, and it's an extreme that we don't know is really necessary."

Fuhrman himself claimed in a 2012 interview with Men's Journal that he fasted for 46 days, drinking only water, to cure an injury to his heel.

Fuhrman said he stands behind his diet and its potential to heal people from all manner of ailments, but that he no longer supports Oz — not because of any concerns about conflicts of interest or the science presented on his show, which he acknowledged could be "B-grade" or "C-grade," but because of his support for former president Trump.

"I just can't, in my own mind, fathom a person to be ethical and reasonable and be a Trump supporter," Fuhrman said. "I just can't understand how it happens."

Representatives for Oz did not respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Can't get breading to stick to fried chicken

I know this topic has come up many times on r/Cooking at least, and I've read them all. Unfortunately, none of them seem to directly respond to my situation. I'm making chicken using a wet marinade overnight, then into the dry, and then directly into the oil. I've tried it many times, but only ever managed to get the breading to stick well once, and then it was ultra gross and thick and undercooked (the breading, not the chicken). I'm trying to roughly achieve the effect seen in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5nKYqvu29w&t=1448s

But I'm not cooking a whole chicken, but trying to make breast strips. Unfortunately, there are no measurements in the video, and Kenji says you can just eyeball things, so I can't imagine that this is a significant factor. In any event, my marinade/batter is 350 ml buttermilk; two eggs; 150 g flour; then salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika. My dredge is 450 grams flour, a tablespoon or so of baking powder, and then salt, pepper, and garlic.

Marinade overnight, then dredge thoroughly, then throw into a paper shopping bag with the remaining dredge, and shake it up. Comes out of this process looking, if anything, over-breaded.

As I'm cooking smaller pieces of chicken, I figure I'll just fry them for a shorter time. I heat my oil to 325, and put all my pieces (consisting of two large breasts) into my 9 quart dutch oven, which is about half full of oil. Kenji manages to get an entire chicken into a much smaller wok, and cooks it for 20 minutes without getting oily and gross. I leave mine in for four minutes, and then pull it out. Half the breading is already off, and may not have ever been there in the first place somehow (?!) judging by what's left in the dutch oven. I gave up without even attempting the second fry, but my plan was to heat the oil to 375 and cook for another 1-2 minutes.

So I have the following theories about what I'm doing wrong, and since this recipe requires overnight marinading, I don't have the ability to iterate on it effectively.

  • The size of the pieces is dooming me. Because they're much smaller than the giant whole breasts and thighs in the video, I can't leave them in too long or the chicken will overcook. But I can't leave them in for too short a time because the breading won't be able to set up.

    • To solve this, I was trying to reduce the temp as much as possible to allow a long enough cook time, but after four minutes starting at 325 (the lowest temp the oil ever got to was about 250, which the video says is in range for the first fry, and I actually had to turn off the burner to get the oil temp down to the 250-275 range as per the video), the largest piece was cooked through.
  • My batter/marinade isn't thick enough.

    • The one time I managed to get it to stick, with the super gross thick stuff, I used a very thick batter, with maybe double the amount of flour quoted above.
  • I overcrowded the pot. I almost flatly refuse to believe this is the case considering that Kenji cooked a whole chicken at once in a smaller vessel and with less oil. He even had an end of dry flour sticking out for like five minutes!

  • One thing I definitely did not do that Kenji does was in how he placed his chicken in the wok, which was a pure oversight by me. I kind of just dropped mine gently in, rather than letting it set up kind of in stages as it's inserted in the oil.

Any help would be much appreciated, except telling me to dip things in egg and then breadcrumb or whatever. I'm not using that technique, and I don't plan to.

  • The photo was taken while the state senator was part of the faculty at the US Army War College.
  • Faculty members were permitted to pose for the photo while dressed as an historical figure.

Pennsylvania Republican Doug Mastriano, a state senator and Trump-backed candidate for governor, posed for a photo donning a Confederate uniform while an instructor at the US Army War College in 2014, Reuters reported Friday evening.

Mastriano, a retired Army colonel and military historian, was posing for the photo with other faculty members, who were given the option of dressing in historical garb, Reuters reported. Only six of the 21 instructors did so. Mastriano left the Army in 2017.

Mastriano did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did a representative for his opponent, Josh Shapiro's campaign.

The Department of Defense effectively banned Confederate flags from US military bases in 2020 under updated guidance.

Mastriano in recent years has fashioned himself a Trump devotee, serving as the "point person" for the former president's campaign in its efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Pennsylvania. He has been a vocal 2020 election denier but had to be assured that his role in the plot was not "illegal," according to The New York Times.

The gubernatorial candidate continued to stoke controversy earlier this year when he faced criticism over his efforts to cultivate support on Gab, the social network founded by a self-described Christian nationalist.

Mastriano has since deleted his Gab account, but not before he paid the network $5,000 for consulting services, per campaign finance filings. The founder of Gab has repeatedly expressed contempt for Jews, who he says have no place in his right-wing movement.

Associating with Gab is a particularly sensitive issue in Pennsylvania. In 2018, a user of the website — who posted that he couldn't "sit by and watch" as Jewish groups assisted with the resettlement of refugees — gunned down 11 Jews at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Mastriano's state senate district is also home to Gettysburg, the site of the bloodiest battle during the Civil War, Reuters noted, which the Union side won.

Trump's Truth Social platform had its trademark application rejected because its name wasn't unique enough

Donald Trump (left) and a phone displaying his social media app, Truth Social.
The US Patent and Trademark Office found the name of former President Donald Trump's Truth Social app too similar to the names of other business entities.
  • Trump's attempt to trademark his Truth Social platform's name has been rejected.
  • The patent office said the company's name was far too similar to other companies.
  • This included the Vero — True Social platform and the Truth Network, a Christian radio outfit.

Former President Donald Trump has run into a significant setback with trademarking the name for his social media platform, Truth Social.

According to a filing released this month and tweeted by Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer, Trump's social media app had its application refused by the US Patent and Trademark Office because its name bore too much resemblance to the names of other business entities.

The patent office found that Trump's company name was "confusingly similar" to other entities, including Vero — True Social, an app-based social media platform, and the Truth Network, a Christian radio broadcast network.

Among the patent office's concerns was that Truth Social's name bore the "same dominant feature" — the word "Truth" — as the Truth Network. In relation to Vero — True Social, the patent office wrote that the "dominant wording TRUTH and TRUE communicate the same idea of being honest or emphasizing fact while networking socially."

"Moreover, both marks also contain the wording SOCIAL meaning they look and sound similar generally outside of a small variation of TRUTH," read the filing.

"Because the marks are similar and the goods and services are related, there is a likelihood of confusion as to the source of applicant's goods and services, and registration is refused pursuant to Section 2(d) of the Trademark Act," the filing concluded.

Trump has until February 2023 to respond to the filing.

This is not the first setback Trump's social media platform has faced.
