Why are tomato seeds removed when making pizza sauce?

In my experience, a seedless tomato, simply put, tastes bland. I may be wrong, but when I eat tomatoes I feel like the seeds pack the most flavour... I could say the same applies to peppers too, by the way. Where I live we make something called lutenica (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ljutenica), which is made of stuff like tomatoes, peppers, aubergines etc. When we remove the seeds of the tomatoes and peppers, it simply doesn't taste as good as it tastes with them included in the final product. So, why do they get removed when making a pizza sauce?

Garlic in oil

After doing a garlic roast in the oven last night, I decided to look for some recipes for future confit. I stumbled upon articles warning about the risk of botulism.

I wasn’t able to find a « timeline » however for safe consumption. I roasted my garlic for 2 hours and a half, cooled down about 30 mins on my counter and then transferred into a pot to put in the refrigerator. Do you think 4-5 days is reasonable?

TIA!

Pork loin with chili paste - not sure if this will work or if I can make it better

So I've made and am currently simmering down like half a gallon of enchilada sauce. Aside from reconstituted dried and toasted chilis, the sauce is made from charred garlic, fresh onion, some cumin and oregano (so far). I've blended it and passed it through a medium mesh strainer (thanks Rick) and into a pot with plenty of hot oil in it.

I'm currently simmering it to reduce the moisture, which I plan to replace with chicken broth or stock, and probably a bit of Knorr chicken base depending on taste.

For my enchiladas, I have a pork loin that I want to roast. What I'm considering, but not exactly sure how I might execute, is to reserve a portion of the concentrated chili paste, let it cool, then mix with oil and rub or possibly marinate the pork loin with prior to roasting in the oven. I'm also concerned about the chili paste burning and getting bitter while I roast.

Is this a thing? Could it be good? Is it a flop? I have so many hours into this sauce at this point that I don't want to waste it, or waste a pork loin.

Russia's top commander for the Ukraine war hasn't been seen for 2 weeks: report

Russian President Vladimir Putin poses with Col. Gen. Alexander Dvornikov during a 2016 award ceremony in Moscow.
  • Russia's war chief in Ukraine hasn't been seen for weeks, NYT reported, citing US officials.
  • Some officials speculate he may have been removed from his post as top commander.
  • Gen. Alexander Dvornikov was dubbed "The Butcher of Syria," and was assigned to Ukraine in April.

Russia's top commander in the Ukraine war, General Alexander Dvornikov, hasn't been seen for two weeks, leading some US officials to speculate that he may have been relieved of his post, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

Dvornikov was initially assigned to Ukraine in April amid a leadership shake-up that was widely interpreted as an admission by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow's war plan failed in its earlier months.

The Times previously cited US officials saying that, before Dvornikov's appointment, Russia's generals ran the war out of Moscow with no central battlefield commander.

Dvornikov's designation as ground commander was meant to change that. One of his main aims was to improve the coordination between units in Ukraine, the BBC previously reported, citing Western officials.

Before the Ukraine war, Dvornikov was dubbed "The Butcher of Syria" for his role in the Russian bombardment of the country in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Similarly, Ukraine-held territories in the Donbas region have endured heavy bombardment as part of Russia's new offensive under Dvornikov, with one city being hit "200 times an hour," according to Ukrainian officials.

However, Dvornikov's efforts have yet to produce significant results.

Last week, a US official said Russia had lost an estimated 1,000 tanks, a substantial number of troops, combat assets, and aircraft since the war began on February 24.

While Russian forces took the port city of Mariupol after a lengthy siege, they lost Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv in mid-May. Meanwhile, some reports from Ukraine said that Ukrainian troops had even fought their way to the Russian border.

Russia's invasion has continued to stall under Dvornikov because the country's leaders "haven't been able to change the character of the Russian army," Frederick W. Kagan, the director of the Critical Threats Project at the American Enterprise Institute, told The Times.

The Russian army's fundamental flaws include its ground units not being trained to make their own decisions in battle and its air force not staying in Ukrainian airspace to achieve air superiority, The Times reported.

A National crisis

We are facing a national crisis the likes of which will reverberate throughout history. No, I’m not talking about the border crisis, the economy, or gun violence. I’m not talking about runaway inflation, radical right or left wing extremists, or high cost of living.

I’m talking about jalapeños. They are no longer hot! Why?!? Why can’t you buy a hot jalapeño anywhere? Everywhere I go they are so mild I want to juice them and use them like eye drops.

Someone please help me understand this insanity!

Sugar is Crystalizing and Won’t Fully Melt

When I try melting sugar in a splash of water on the stove, the sugar never fully melts. It just crystallizes.

I’ve tried low heat and high heat. Only swirling my pan, no stirring. And I use the same Calphalon stainless steel pan each time.

I’m technically using this as a sugar wax, so I’m not making caramel sauce or anything. I just need to know why it won’t turn clear in the pan.

Should I try no water? Stirring constantly? I’m at a loss.

Lock the post if needed, but I’m pretty sure this subreddit will be more helpful than any Google search I’ve tried.

Update: it still crystallized the slightest bit after adding more water, nowhere NEAR as much as it had in the past. I might let it cook a bit longer next time. And I guess rinse everything again before I try.

How to replicate velveeta shells and cheese

I am from Canada and I have always wanted to try velveeta shells and cheese. Problem is, is that I can’t find the velveeta shells and cheese product in any of the stores near me. So my solution, was to buy just a 16oz block of velveeta, great for melting cheese and a box of medium barilla shells pasta. I wanted to know if anyone could tell me how I could replicate the original velveeta shells and cheese to a tee. I’ve seen recipes calling for rouxs and extra cheddar cheeses but I’m afraid that it might disrupt the authentic artificial cheese taste I’m going for with shells and cheese pasta. So if anyone had any tips as to how I could emulate the flavours and textures of velveeta shells and cheese, please let me know! Thanks if you read this (also my main problem is that I have a block of 16oz velveeta but I would like to have that liquid gold from the velveeta cheese and shells packets you guys are accustomed too)

Mo Brooks says people need guns to 'take back' the government should it ever turn 'dictatorial'

Republican Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama, his right index finger raised, addressed a Capitol Hill press conference while standing against a backdrop of several American flags.
GOP Rep. Mo Brooks said he would only consider proposals about guns that guarantee Americans their Second Amendment right to bear and keep them.
  • Rep. Mo Brooks spoke out against more gun restrictions in the wake of the Texas school shooting.
  • He said the Second Amendment ensures that people can take back power from a dictatorial government.
  • The congressman said the idea of the government turning dictatorial is still "a fear today."

Rep. Mo Brooks said this weekend that he would not support any new gun control restrictions, arguing that people would need their guns if they ever had to take back power from a "dictatorial" government.

"The Second Amendment is designed to help ensure that we, the citizenry, always have the right to take back our government should it become dictatorial," he said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday.

Host Sandra Smith had asked Brooks if he was open to changes being made to existing gun laws in the wake of last Tuesday's mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

"As long as we enjoy un-infringed Second Amendment rights, then we don't really have to worry that much about the government ever becoming dictatorial," Brooks said.

"But the moment that we take from our citizenry our ability to take our government back is the moment that the ability of dictatorial forces increases to the point where perhaps they will try to implement a dictatorial government at the federal level," he added.

The congressman — who is running for a Senate seat in Alabama — claimed that the idea of the government turning dictatorial was still "a fear today." Brooks added that he would only consider proposals about guns that guarantee Americans their Second Amendment right to bear and keep firearms.

"If you're talking about depriving people of their Second Amendment right to bear arms, well, first, that's unconstitutional, so you're going to have to address that with a constitutional amendment," he said. "We'll see how Congress and the states react to that kind of measure."

Brooks also recalled a 2017 incident in Alexandria in which he was caught in the crossfire of a shootout at a baseball field. Citing his experience, he said that more needed to be done to "stop the motivation that causes these criminals, these horrific individuals, to do what they do."

People have called on conservative lawmakers like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz to take action to stop gun violence. However, the notion of imposing more restrictions on gun ownership has also received pushback from many figures on the right like Brooks, Cruz, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

However, some lawmakers like GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham have left the door open for a debate on gun control. Last week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also signaled that he would be willing to work with Democratic lawmakers on a bipartisan piece of gun safety legislation, but did not endorse any specific proposals.

Keeping baked foods hot for outdoor event

When prepping “crispy” baked appetizers like empanadas, Jamaican beef patties, etc for a crowd indoors, I normally hold them in the oven at a low temp so they can stay warm without getting soggy.

I’m planning an event outdoors this summer for a large crowd (200), and the closest oven is too far to plan to go back and forth. Are there any reasonably convenient ways to keep these types of hot for 2-3 hours outdoors? I have chafing dishes but I’m guessing those won’t work in the typical fashion because of the steam - is there a way to mod them for dry heat use?

There’s also electrical power on the field and I am open to renting event equipment if there’s something reasonably straightforward.

2 dead and 20 injured in major car crash near annual Memorial Day event in Lincoln, Nebraska

At a press conference on Monday, Lincoln's chief of police said an 18-year-old man struck two women in their 20s in their car on Sunday night.
  • Lincoln, Nebraska's police department said it is investigating a major car crash there.
  • The car crash, which happened late Sunday night, resulted in two deaths and 20 injuries.
  • The crash happened near an annual event, but the cars were not participants, police said.

The police department of Lincoln, Nebraska, said on Monday that it was investigating what caused a major Sunday night car crash that left two women dead and 20 people injured. The crash took place as an annual Memorial Day weekend event called "Americruise," which has been held there since the mid-1990s, was winding down, police said.

At a press conference on Monday, Lincoln Chief of Police Teresa Ewins said near the event, where people gather to view and drive classic and modern cars, an 18-year-old man from Omaha driving a black Ford Taurus struck two Lincoln women in their 20s in a white Toyota Corolla at 10:47 p.m. on Sunday.

The two cars were not participating in the Americruise event, Ewins said.

Both women were pronounced dead at the scene, Ewins said, and the man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Ewins said 20 bystanders sought treatment for injuries at local hospitals, with one in "critical, but stable condition" and the rest with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Ford had initially rolled onto its top, pinning two victims underneath, Ewins said, and "bystanders worked together to roll the vehicle back over and off the victims." The police chief added that her department was looking to address car collisions and drivers' dangerous behavior in Lincoln.

2 of the world's top rice producers are reportedly in discussions about hiking prices, and it's bad news for buyers

A Thai farmer works on his rice field in Nakhonsawan province, north of Bangkok.
Major rice exporter Thailand is seeking to hike rice prices with Vietnam.
  • Thailand and Vietnam — two of the world's top rice producers — are talking about hiking prices.
  • Thailand's government spokesperson said they are aiming to increase farmer income and bargaining power.
  • Thailand and Vietnam are the world's second- and third-largest rice exporters after India.

Two of the world's top rice producers are in discussions to raise prices together, Reuters reported, citing Thai government spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana.

"We aim to raise rice prices, increase farmer income and increase bargaining power in the global market," Thanakorn said on Friday, per Reuters. "The rice price has been low for more than 20 years while the cost of production has been increasing."

Thailand and Vietnam are the world's second- and third-largest rice exporters after India. A price increase in the staple grain would be bad news for billions of people across the world, especially as it comes on top of soaring wheat prices.

Thai Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit told reporters on Friday that the country's rice exports are getting a boost this year due to a recovery in global demand and as the country's currency falls to a five-year low against the US dollar, which is used in the trade of commodities internationally, per Bloomberg.

Vietnam's agriculture ministry did not immediately respond to Insider's or Reuters' requests for comments.

Vietnam's Food Association played down the prospect of measures to boost prices ahead of a June meeting with its Thai counterparts.

"The meeting will focus on measures to cooperate in sustainable food production," Nguyen Ngoc Nam, the chairman of Vietnam's Food Association, told Reuters. "It's not reasonable to talk about raising or controlling rice prices at this time when the global food price is on the rise."

Neither Thailand nor Vietnam are facing a shortage in rice supply this year, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture. However, like in many countries, inflation in both countries has risen sharply in the last year, putting pressure on the government to soften the impact on their populations. About 30% and 40% of the population in Thailand and Vietnam respectively are employed in the agricultural sector, according to the United Nations.

Consumer prices in Thailand are hovering around a 13-year high, having gained 4.71% on-year in April, according to data from the country's Commerce Ministry. Prices in Vietnam rose 2.86% on-year in May, according to data from the country's statistics office.

But consumers could turn to other major exporters for rice — like top exporter India — for supplies.

"If Thailand and Vietnam try to jack up the prices, obviously price-sensitive buyers in Africa will shift towards India," B.V. Krishna Rao, president of the All India Rice Exporters Association, told Reuters. He said neither country has approached India about participating in a rice cartel, Reuters reported.

Benchmark export prices for Thai rice have averaged $420 a metric ton this year — 16% higher than India's $363 a ton, per Reuters.

Indian trade and government sources told Reuters on Friday that there were no plans to limit rice exports.

I live in Canada so we don’t have chuck roasts - well we do I guess but they’re called blade roasts. The thing is, they are usually $90. I just wanted to follow this simple recipe I found on Pinterest for dinner one night this week but I don’t know if I could just use a regular roast beef? Or another cut? Sorry I am not well versed in beef cuts? Lol!

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Friday that an anonymous donor will cover all funeral costs following the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

On Tuesday, an 18-year-old opened fire at Robb Elementary School, killing 21 people — 19 of whom were children. The Uvalde shooting was one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.

Abbott said an anonymous individual donated $175,000 to ensure that families could pay funeral costs.

"We appreciate that anonymous donor for his generosity," Abbott said during a press conference, "and we will ensure that those resources get into the right hands to make sure that no family who is suffering from incalculable heartbreak at this time will have to worry about a single cost with regard to anything concerning this travesty."

Many of the family members of victims of the tragedy have turned to crowdfunding for resources such as therapy and medical expenses

GoFundMe recently compiled a list of verified fundraisers for Uvalde victims, which includes families of those who were killed.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for Irma Garcia, a fourth-grade teacher who shielded her students during the attack, and her husband Joe Garcia, who died two days later from a heart attack, raised over $2.4 million.

Marjorie Taylor Greene appeared to push a baseless conspiracy theory about the Texas shooter, suggesting he was into 'wearing eyeliner' and 'cross dressing'

Marjorie Taylor Greene
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Sunday suggested that the Texas gunman was into "cross dressing," referencing a baseless conspiracy theory about the shooter's identity that originated on fringe messaging board 4Chan.
  • Greene pushed a baseless conspiracy theory about the Texas gunman being into "cross-dressing."
  • She also speculated without evidence that the shooter had "mental issues."
  • Rep. Paul Gosar pushed a similar theory, calling the shooter a "transsexual leftist illegal alien."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene pushed a baseless rumor on Sunday about the Texas elementary school massacre, positing without evidence that the gunman was into "cross-dressing."

Greene was speaking during a live Facebook broadcast, where she referenced the school shooting at the Robb Elementary School, during which 21 people, including 19 children, were killed.

"He clearly had a lot of mental issues going on, as was shown with him wearing eyeliner, cross-dressing, a lot of his language, being a loner," Greene said, adding that more information was still coming out about the school shooter.

She also questioned how the shooter got the money to buy the guns he used in the shooting despite coming from a low-income household.

"He must have really been saving up!" Greene said.

In her broadcast, Greene appeared to touch on two separate conspiracy theories swirling around the shooting. Greene seemed to be referencing the baseless rumor pushed by her colleague, Rep. Paul Gosar, that the shooter was a transgender individual.

Last week, Gosar began spreading a baseless, transphobic rumor via a now-deleted tweet that the shooter was a "transsexual leftist illegal alien" hours after the shooting. This is factually wrong on all counts and originated from 4Chan, an unmoderated fringe messaging board. 4Chan users posted images of trans women and falsely claimed they were the shooter, despite these women having nothing to do with what happened in Uvalde.

Greene also casually referenced a baseless conspiracy theory that the Texas massacre was a false flag operation. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and several QAnon influencers posited without any substantiation that the mass shooting was a staged event, with Jones speculating that it was "very suspicious timing, just days before the Houston NRA convention — and wondering how the shooter got "all that money" to purchase his guns.

Jones previously claimed the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which took the lives of 20 children and six adults, was a hoax. After multiple families sued the right-wing radio host, he said in a deposition that "a form of psychosis" made him believe the Sandy Hook shooting wasn't real and admitted that he spread misinformation about it.

As for Greene, she took a pro-gun stance hours after the Uvalde shooting, asserting that the US doesn't need "more gun control" but should "return to God instead." At the time, she also speculated without evidence that "meds can be the problem."

Greene has run on a pro-gun platform. She has been known to hold gun raffles for fundraising campaigns and videotaped harassing a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in January 2021.

Best Tool to Decant Ice Cream from Machine

I've been making 2-3 batches of ice cream a week for at least five years and finally worked up the level of annoyance to put out a request for a very specific tool recommendation. Does anyone have a favorite tool to transfer ice cream from a home machine (e.g. no gravity drop mechanism) into a static freezing bowl?

I've been using a small, flexible silicone turner which works pretty well, but speed is the most important thing post-churn and it's taking too long to transfer the churned ice cream from the machine to a freezing bowl.

CASPER, Wyoming — Dee Lubeck traveled roughly 275 miles across the state to see former President Donald Trump take the stage on Saturday for a rally in support of Harriet Hageman, the primary challenger of Rep. Liz Cheney.

The 71-year-old voter, a lifelong Republican who resides in the small town of Pinedale, said he has no intention of backing Cheney, Wyoming's lone member of Congress. His vote is for Hageman, "even if I gotta crawl to do it," Lubeck said, pointing to his walking cane beside him.

"I don't want to spit in front of you, but that's what I do when I hear the name Liz," he said with a laugh.

The mention of Cheney's name provoked scoffing, head-shaking and widespread disapproval among dedicated Trump supporters who flocked to the former president's event on Saturday afternoon from all over the red state. Attendees, donned in "Trump 2024" caps and T-shirts, waited for hours in a line that snaked through the parking lot of the Ford Wyoming Center, excited for Trump's first-ever appearance in the state.

Cheney, a conservative Republican who's served in the US House of Representatives since 2017, stood by Trump throughout his four-year term. But in the wake of the January 6 Capitol riot, she broke from Trump, voting to impeach him on a charge of "incitement of insurrection." Over the past year, Cheney has emerged as an outspoken and prominent Trump critic, characterizing herself as a defender of the Constitution.

Consequently, Trump has taken sharp aim at Cheney, repeatedly disparaging her and launching a revenge plot to unseat her. His Saturday appearance in Wyoming served to implore voters to choose Hageman over Cheney in the upcoming Republican primary on August 16. At the rally, Trump's supporters, some of whom have previously voted for Cheney, poured scorn on her.

"My opinion of her is treasonistic [sic]. I don't feel she did her sworn duty in representing her constituents," James West, a 40-year-old from Lander, said of Cheney.

"Disgrace to the Republican Party," said Chris Sorge, 30. "Two-faced," added Dallas Peasley, 31. "She might as well put a D in front of her name," Obe Corbian, 48, said. Cheney's a "RINO," said Chelsea Roan, 36.

Cheney's decision to criticize the former president has put her at political risk in a state that overwhelmingly voted for Trump in 2020. Yet despite the nation- and state-wide backlash she's endured because of her stance toward Trump, Cheney has stood firm against the attacks, and officially launched her reelection bid on Thursday, puzzling voters at the rally.

"She should go back to wherever she's from and never come back," Delia, 60, said. Her husband, Lester, wore a cap with the words "Piss on Cheney" inscribed on it. The couple asked Insider not to disclose their last name.

Though many attendees swore they would never tick Cheney's name on a ballot box again, some were still uncertain about how they'd vote in a few months, leaving open the possibility of supporting the incumbent congresswoman.

Kay West, a 75-year-old from Casper, said the decision is tough because while she cast her vote for Cheney before, Trump's endorsement for Hageman has "enticed" her to learn more about Cheney's challenger, an attorney who grew up on a ranch outside of Fort Laramie, Wyoming.

"Liz Cheney has done some good," West said, adding that she's undecided at the moment.

Cheney has "stood up for what she believes in. That's Wyoming through and through," another undecided voter, who asked Insider not to name them, said. "I want to see what Harriet has to say."

But according to Janet Shaver, Cheney is no longer the same person who she voted for in the past, telling Insider: "We're all in for Harriet."

"She's changed," Shaver, a 75-year-old from Thermopolis, said of Cheney. "She's very against Trump. She did wrong."

Bob Langdon, too, said he's committed to voting for Hageman, citing Trump's support for her.

"Trump don't make mistakes. He's the man," Langdon, 74, said. "Anybody he says you should vote for, you should vote for."

"She's not for the people," Langdon said of Cheney. "Go get a job flipping burgers somewhere."

The closely watched race is widely considered to represent a test of Trump's power over the Republican Party. Earlier this week, his high-profile endorsements for Republican candidates against incumbent officials in Georgia flopped. Yet Trump-backed candidates in Ohio and Pennsylvania did win their primary elections in recent weeks.
